The Stranger Book Review

The Stranger is a historical novel written in 1942 by French Albert Camus on the absurdity of these times and the life of Meursault on French Algeria. It was assigned to me at school because it is a novel to analyze since it evolved around the existential crisis of people during this time. It also explores the concept of absurdity and existentialism. It is about Meursault who is an absurdist and a French living in French occupied Algeria. He gets into some problems because of his character traits and even kills a man. The book revolves around telling his side of the story and how he feels and what he expresses all the time. It revolves around him completely and how his absurdism led him to make certain decisions that therefore led him to where he ends up. Now on to whether I enjoyed the book or not, I didn't. I found it boring to read. It didn't have an interesting plot and was pretty predictable most of the time. However, it was a good book to discuss and have several differing opinions on but it is not something I would read on my free time because I just wasn't interested in the plot and it was boring. I also didn't like Meursault and didn't really get to know his character and become attached. I also thought he could've been a more complex character than what he was and not so straight up because it would've made it more interesting. I would give this book a 3/10 only because it did have some interesting ideas worthy of discussion in a school classroom.

"I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world finding it so much like myself"
"Since we're all going to die, it's obvious that when and how don't matter."
